7 Inexpensive Ideas for Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and for a lot of people it represents a great opportunity to let the people you love know how much they mean to you. Commercial holiday aside, this day is meant to celebrate love and friendship so don’t let your pocket be a limitation with these inexpensive ideas to enjoy this lovely day.

1- Have a romantic picnic. If the winter weather isn’t an issue for you and your friend/significant other; try having a nice picnic in one of the many parks and green areas in Madrid (we recommend the Retiro Park, Bosque de La Herrería, Quinta de los Molinos park and Casa de Campo; most of these parks have picnic tables). Bonus tip: It seems like for February 14th the weather will be sunny with areas of low clouds.

2- Plan a romantic dinner with your significant other in a restaurant you know he/she likes. This may not be as inexpensive as other ideas in this post but we assure you there are plenty of budget-friendly restaurants in Madrid where nothing says “I love you” better that a full stomach and a glass of wine. Don’t forget to make a reservation a few days prior to avoid waiting long lines and killing the mood.

3- Wine tasting and tapas. All around Madrid there are plenty of places where you can have a sensorial experience tasting different kinds of wine (if wine is not your thing there are beer and whisky tasting options as well), afterwards you can always go for tapas around town.

4- Book a date at a wellness center or spa for two. Nowadays our busy life rhythm makes us feel like there’s almost no time to relax, so taking a couple of hours to chill and get pampered is always a good idea. All over Madrid you can find numerous places to enjoy thermal waters, oriental massages and Jacuzzis for two. There are places that provide discounts for Valentine’s Day, which may require an appointment.

5- Sunset at the Debod Temple. This is a fantastic idea for those in a budget (totally free) yet not less romantic. The Debod Temple at sunset is one of the most beautiful places to see the sunset, plus since the temple is located on a hill, the observation deck (a few steps from the temple) provides a wonderful view of the city.

6- Buy an inexpensive bag of chocolate (even better if the chocolate is heart-shaped) and give some to your classmates and/or coworkers. If you feel like giving others a reason to smile on your daily commute to school or work you can give some candy away to strangers who look like they may need a bit of happiness.

7- Plan a night out with your friends. Perhaps watching a film at the Movie Theater, go out dancing or catching a comedy show are fun ideas; and even if you don’t feel like going out having a good old house party with good friends and your favorite food is always a good idea.

Whatever you decide to do, as long as it’s with the people you love will make for a Valentine’s Day well spent. Enjoy!
