Why Madrid is a great winter destination

Traveling is always a good idea and doing it in the winter is a wonderful way of experiencing the season. Although most people reserve their travel planning for the summer, winter in Madrid is a bucket list experience to try, especially since the cooler temperatures mean lower prices, less crowds and cultural display. Here are some reasons why Madrid is a great winter destination:

Nice weather

Madrid is one of the highest capital cities in Europe which translates into a mild to cool seasonal weather. The temperature is relatively warm in the early afternoon and it remains in an average of 9 ºC to 12ºC (48.2 ºF to 53.6ºF) during the day, perfect for a nice walk around the culturally rich streets, monuments, beautiful parks, restaurants and bars.

Warm snacks

The chilly weather is perfect to try the city’s famous “churros con chocolate” available in almost every bar and coffee shop. You’ll find taperías (which are similar to restaurants where you can order bite-sized snacks with a drink) all over the city center, this type of food is flavorful and affordable, an excellent idea for a night out with friends.

Reduced prices

Just as the prices increase during the summer, many stores, museums and tourist attractions reduce their prices during the winter season. While walking on the commercial streets and numerous shopping malls in the city you’ll see on the store windows the sign “Rebajas” which means On Sale where you can find special offers with discounts of up to 70%.

Free art

There are many free museums in the Spanish capital but even though not all the museums of Madrid are free, in several museums you can find special hours and discounts for students in specific days of the week and since not many travelers visit this city during winter, lines are normally small and sometimes non-existent. So Why not give it a try?
